The cards you need are mostly not showing in other players' up cards.
In Stud this is called a "live hand." Example: if neither of the 2 remaining cards of your rank is showing, your pair is live. With 1 showing, your chance of making trips drops from 20% to 13%, and with 2 showing, to 5%. The same hand can be a play or a fold depending on whether it's live.
