Speculative hand (poker)

Also: Spec hand

Poker term

A hand that wins big when it hits but usually misses.

Small pairs and suited connectors are typical. When they miss you can fold right away, and when they hit you win the opponent's stack. Example. 55 wins big when it flops a set, and 76s when it makes a straight or flush. Play them by calling in position when the opponent is deep and doesn't fold.
