Stand pat (poker)

Also: standing pat, pat

Poker term

In draw games, declaring that you draw 0 cards.

The basic play is to stand pat with a made hand (pat hand). Standing pat with a weak hand is a snow (a bluff). The only thing opponents see is how many cards you draw, so saying "pat" itself represents a made hand. Example: in 2-7, against a pat 8-5-4-3-2, an opponent drawing 1 on the last draw beats it 16% of the time.
