Strong (poker)

Also: strong hand

Poker term

Hands that bet for value, such as two pair or better and overpairs.

This is the "value" group. Two pair or better and overpairs take three streets (b/b/b); top pair with a strong kicker (Q or better, J or better when top pair is aces) takes two streets against a standard player (b/b/x) and three against a player who doesn't fold. Example: on a K♠ 8♦ 3♣ board, AA and 88 bet three times; AK and KQ depend on the opponent. With 3 or more cards of one suit or a paired board, a one-pair hand drops to Medium; size 33% on dry boards, and 75% on wet boards and against players who don't fold.
